Hidden Dangers

There have been a lot of reported cases of hidden dangers to our children that we may not have thought about. The one that stood out the most to me was our washing machines. A child left his mother’s sight for mere minutes. Yet that was enough time for her 21-month-old to fall into the top-loading washing machine and become submerged in a full tub. Washing machine-related injuries are more common than deaths, says Scott Wolfson, director of public affairs for the CPSC. Aside from drowning, children may suffer burns from hot water in the machine, or injuries to their limbs if they come into contact with a rapid spin cycle. Adding a safety child lock to your laundry room door or to the washer or dryer can dramatically cut down the risk to your child.

It’s that time of year again where sun is shining and the air is hot. During this summer, it is important not to forget about your family pets, as the hot weather affects them, just as it affects us. Here are a few helpful tips to help keep your pets safe during the dog days of summer!

  1. Pay attention to the hot weather – The hot and humid weather affects animals the same way as it affects humans; if not more. Most animals are covered in a fur coat, making them hotter in the summer. Pay attention to the weather before you expose them to it, and try to walk them either early in the morning or late at night if it’s going to be hot and humid out. If they will be in the house all day while you’re at work, make sure to keep either a fan or air conditioner on. Another way to help block out heat is by keeping the shades drawn. Also think ahead before leaving them outside all day. The sun can dehydrate them quickly, along with causing them to get heat stroke.
  2. Think ahead before going on vacation – Be sure to plan ahead when going on vacation if your pet is not able to go with you. Make sure that the person that will be watching your animals is trust-worthy and qualified to do so. Have the person watching your animal provide you with references, along with any training certificates and qualifications received to ensure that they are legitimate. Also be sure to examine the area in which your animal will be staying and check for safety and health conditions. A great way to find a trusted kennel or pet-sitter is by word of mouth. Ask your family and friends who they use for pet-sitting.
  3. Beach Safety – If you are thinking of bringing your pet to the beach or a lake, be sure to monitor the weather. Would you want to be out in the sun with a fur coat on? If you decide to bring your animal to the beach, make sure you find or create a shaded area, and provide them with access to plenty of cold water; as the hot sun can dehydrate them quickly. Also keep in mind, sand gets hot throughout the day, so bring a towel or blanket for your pet to lie on to protect them from getting burnt.
  4. Car Safety – Only take your pets in the car if it is for a short ride, or if you know it will be cooler out. Try avoiding leaving them unattended in the car for long periods of time, as cars can heat up very quickly on hot days, even if you do leave the windows open.
  5. Vet Maintenance – It is important to monitor your pet’s health and well-being throughout the summer. Be sure to examine them after coming inside to check for ticks. Ensure that they are properly vaccinated and take treatments to prevent fleas and heartworm. Also ensure that they are spayed and neutered as a way to help in decreasing the homeless animal population.

By following these five helpful tips, your pets are on their way to a healthier, more enjoyable summer. So sit back and enjoy it with them!
